We provide guidance to parents on how to foster positive mental and emotional growth in their children, offering strategies to reinforce the mental skills and character strengths we develop in our coaching sessions. What are character strengths?Character strengths are fundamental positive traits that contribute to an individual's overall well-being and fulfillment in life. Rooted in the traditions of positive psychology, these strengths encompass key virtues such as wisdom, justice, temperance, and transcendence. Each of these virtues is represented by specific character strengths, such as perseverance, love of learning, and self-regulation, which play a crucial role in how we interact with the world around us. Character strengths are dynamic and can be developed over time through intentional effort and self-reflection. They help individuals achieve personal growth, maintain healthy relationships, and navigate challenges in various life domains, including sports, work, school, and personal interactions. By identifying and cultivating these strengths, people can enhance their resilience, emotional well-being, and overall life satisfaction. In practice, character strengths can manifest in different forms—some may be consistently displayed, while others emerge in response to specific situations. Understanding and applying these strengths in a balanced way is essential for achieving a well-rounded and fulfilling life, where strengths are neither overused nor underused. Engaging with character strengths allows individuals to lead more meaningful lives, contributing not only to personal success but also to the betterment of society as a whole.

What is performance psychology?Performance psychology is the scientific study and application of psychological principles to enhance performance in various domains such as sports, performing arts, business, and high-risk professions. It focuses on the mental components necessary for superior performance, including skills development, mental resilience, and coping strategies. Unlike traditional psychology, which often deals with pathology, performance psychology emphasizes achieving excellence and optimal functioning under pressure. Techniques such as goal setting, visualization, mindfulness, and positive psychology are employed to help individuals and teams enhance their performance, maintain focus, and handle the stress and challenges associated with their fields.

What is meant by "evidence-based"?"Evidence-based" refers to practices, interventions, and strategies that are grounded in scientific research and have been proven effective through rigorous testing and analysis. In the context of mental performance coaching and performance psychology, this means using techniques and methods that have been validated by empirical studies to ensure they deliver reliable and beneficial results. Evidence-based approaches prioritize the use of the best available research, clinical expertise, and consideration of client preferences to provide effective and measurable outcomes. Additionally, "evidence-inspired" practices draw on emerging research and theoretical insights, even if they have not yet undergone extensive validation, to innovate and enhance traditional methods. Unlike self-help books and general advice, which may lack scientific backing and are generally based on the author's unscientific experiences or observations, evidence-based practices ensure a higher standard of credibility and effectiveness.

What is the difference between mental performance coaching and mental health counseling / therapy?Mental performance coaching and mental health counseling serve different but sometimes overlapping needs. Mental performance coaching is centered on setting goals, achieving success, and focusing on the present and future. In contrast, counseling or therapy delves into emotional and psychological issues such as depression and anxiety, examining the past to understand the present, and utilizing therapeutic methods. Therapists diagnose and treat conditions that interfere with daily life, aiming to improve overall emotional well-being. Mental performance coaching typically aims at enhancing performance, learning, and personal growth, while therapy addresses deep emotional challenges and trauma recovery. Mental performance coaching focuses on enhancing mental and emotional skills to optimize performance in sports and improve well-being by using techniques like goal setting, visualization, and relaxation. Mental performance coaching is about building resilience, improving focus, and fostering positive character strengths. Think of it like physical health: just as you see a doctor for persistent physical symptoms, you see a therapist for mental health issues. Coaches, like athletic trainers, work with individuals who are generally well-functioning to enhance their performance. If deeper mental health issues arise during coaching, our mental performance coaches will make a referral to a licensed mental health professional. Our mental performance coaches at ELITE MYND focus on optimizing mental skills for athletic performance, not diagnosing or treating mental health disorders. This ensures athletes receive the specialized support they need to excel both mentally and physically. ELITE MYND Performance LLC and its mental performance coaches do not engage any mental health counseling or any other forms of psychotherapy and are not licensed mental health professionals. Please see Terms & Conditions for more important information.

How are character strengths relevant to sports performance?Character strengths are integral to sports performance, providing a comprehensive framework that supports both individual and team success. Each grouping of character strengths—interpersonal, emotional, restraint, theological, and intellectual— contributes uniquely to athletic achievement. Interpersonal strengths foster team cohesion, communication, and support, which are essential for building strong, collaborative teams. Emotional strengths help athletes manage stress, maintain focus, and encourage creative problem-solving, enabling them to perform effectively under pressure. Restraint strengths promote wise decision-making, self-discipline, and sustained effort, ensuring consistent performance and perseverance through challenges. Theological strengths provide motivation, purpose, and resilience, helping athletes stay committed to their goals even in the face of adversity. Intellectual strengths drive continuous improvement, strategic thinking, and engagement with the sport, fueling a passion for growth and mastery. By understanding and developing these character strengths, athletes can optimize their performance, enhance team dynamics, and achieve sustained success in their sport. This approach can also aid in more effective talent identification and athlete development to ensure that both individual and team potential is fully realized.

What type of athletes do you work with?At ELITE MYND, we work with competitive athletes starting from age 10 and up, including youth, college, and professional levels. Our focus is on those committed to excellence and high performance in their sport rather than the recreational athlete to ensure tailored, high-impact training for those dedicated to excelling in their sport. Starting mental performance training at a young age helps athletes develop essential mental skills for long-term success. Younger athletes learn foundational skills like goal setting, positive self-talk, and visualization, building good habits and boosting confidence. As athletes progress, they engage in more advanced techniques such as mindfulness and detailed mental rehearsal. Additionally, character strength development not only enhances athletic performance but also benefits youth athletes in other areas of life, including academics, by fostering resilience, discipline, and a positive mindset.

How do you support coaches? At ELITE MYND, we take a "coach the coach" approach, empowering coaches with the tools and knowledge they need to enhance their effectiveness and the performance of their athletes. Our support includes personalized coaching sessions, workshops, and ongoing consulting services, all tailored to address the unique challenges coaches face in their roles. Through our "coach the coach" concept, we focus on integrating positive psychology principles and character strengths into coaching practices. This includes training coaches on developing mental resilience, fostering a growth mindset, and improving team dynamics. By equipping them with strategies for mental conditioning, goal setting, and effective communication, we ensure that coaches are prepared to guide their athletes through the pressures of competition and the demands of high performance. We also assist coaches in talent identification and athlete development, providing insights into the character strengths that contribute to athletic success. This enables coaches to better understand their athletes, tailor their coaching methods, and create development plans that align with each athlete’s unique strengths and potential. Our holistic "coach the coach" approach ensures that coaches are not only improving their teams but also advancing their own skills and resilience. This leads to a positive, high-performing environment where both coaches and athletes can thrive.

What is meant by "stengths-centric"?"Strengths-centric" refers to an approach that focuses on identifying, developing, and leveraging an individual's inherent strengths rather than concentrating on their weaknesses or deficits. In the context of mental performance coaching, being strengths-centric means helping athletes recognize and cultivate the positive traits and abilities that contribute most to their success and well-being. This approach is rooted in the principles of positive psychology, which emphasizes building on what individuals do well to enhance their performance, resilience, and overall life satisfaction. By focusing on strengths, athletes can optimize their potential, achieve greater consistency in their performance, and approach challenges with confidence and a growth mindset.

What is positive psychology?Positive psychology is a relatively new branch of psychology that focuses on understanding and enhancing human strengths and well-being, rather than just treating mental illness and pathology. Pioneered in the late 1990s by Martin Seligman and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, this field emphasizes the study of positive human traits and experiences. Key components include happiness, well-being, and character strengths, all of which contribute to a comprehensive understanding of human flourishing. Positive psychology aims to help individuals and communities thrive by promoting resilience, optimism, and a strengths-based approach to life's challenges.
